Verdy vs Ahrefs: Do You Need Ahrefs for a New Website?
Verdy and Ahrefs do different jobs. Ahrefs is a full SEO suite with a huge backlink index, keyword research and rank tracking, priced from $29 a month (Starter) and $129 a month (Lite) as of September 2026. Verdy has none of those; it audits a new site, tells you exactly what to fix for search and AI answers, and shows you where to launch and get listed, free or for a one-time $30 Fix pack. Most new sites should start with Verdy plus the free Ahrefs account, then pay for Ahrefs once content SEO becomes a real channel.
- Ahrefs wins backlink data, keyword research and rank tracking by a mile. Verdy doesn't do any of the three.
- Verdy wins on launch-stage fixes with generated files, AI crawler and llms.txt checks, and a ranked list of places to launch and get listed.
- Cost gap: Verdy is free or $30 once. Ahrefs paid plans run from $29 to $449 a month, plus Enterprise from $1,499.
- Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives verified sites a limited Site Explorer and Site Audit at no cost.
- Pre-launch and just-launched founders: Verdy plus Ahrefs Free. Content sites and agencies: paid Ahrefs.
#Quick verdict
This isn't a close fight on the same ground. Ahrefs is built to research and track search at scale: who links to whom, what people search, where you rank. Verdy is built for the stage before any of that pays off: making sure your site can be crawled, indexed and read by AI assistants, and getting it in front of people through launches, directories and communities.
- Choose Ahrefs if you need backlink analysis, keyword research, rank tracking or competitor research. Verdy offers none of these.
- Choose Verdy if you need a launch-stage audit with exact fixes, AI-readiness checks, and a plan for where to launch and get listed, for free or $30 once.
- Use both if you're early: Verdy for fixes and launches, Ahrefs Free for backlink data on your own verified site.
#What Verdy does
Verdy is a website visibility and launch platform. It tells you what's holding your site back in search and AI answers, what to fix, and where to launch and get listed.
- Free audit (run one here): reads your homepage and crawls about a dozen pages. It checks technical SEO and indexability, titles and meta descriptions, headings, canonicals, sitemap, robots.txt, structured data, Open Graph and X cards, speed via Google PageSpeed Insights, AI crawler access in robots.txt (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others) and llms.txt. It can connect your Google Search Console, read-only, to show real queries, clicks and impressions.
- Fix pack ($30 one time, as shown on verdy.site in September 2026): the evidence and exact fix for every finding, generated files (llms.txt, schema, meta and social tags), a printable report, an implementation brief and 100 credits for AI features.
- Launch console (free, start here): paste a URL and Verdy drafts a product profile, gives you a Launch Score out of 100 across eight areas, and ranks about 150 curated launch opportunities for your product type, from launch platforms and directories to subreddits, newsletters and backlink opportunities. It writes submission copy per destination and verifies that your listings link back to you.
- AI visibility verdict (/verdict): works out the prompts your buyers type into AI assistants, checks the live sources those answers draw from, and scores your AI visibility from 0 to 100, with fixes. It uses credits.
What Verdy doesn't do: it has no backlink index, no keyword volume or difficulty data, no daily rank tracking, no large crawls of thousands of pages and no content editor. It doesn't replace Google Search Console, and it isn't an enterprise SEO suite.
#What Ahrefs does
Ahrefs is an all-in-one SEO and marketing platform. It says its data is "powered by the world's second-most active crawler and 10+ years of web-scale data." The core tools, as listed on ahrefs.com in September 2026:
- Site Explorer: backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords and top pages for any site. This is Ahrefs' signature tool.
- Keywords Explorer: search volume, keyword difficulty, ideas and clusters.
- Rank Tracker: tracks your positions for chosen keywords. The plan table lists weekly updates on Lite through Enterprise.
- Site Audit: crawls your site for 170+ technical and on-page issues, including an "AI discoverability" issues section.
- Content Explorer (Standard and up): finds web mentions and link prospects.
- Brand Radar: AI visibility across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with custom prompt tracking that also covers Claude.
- Also: Web Analytics, Bot Analytics (free in beta on paid plans, set up through Cloudflare), Report Builder, API and MCP access, and an AI Content Helper.
#Feature comparison
Methodology: built from each product's own pages, checked September 28, 2026. "No" means the product doesn't offer the feature, not that it does it badly. No scores, because the two tools aren't trying to do the same job.
| Feature | Verdy | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Backlink index and analysis | No | Yes, Site Explorer, its core strength |
| Keyword research (volume, difficulty) | No | Yes, Keywords Explorer (paid plans only) |
| Rank tracking | No | Yes, Rank Tracker (weekly updates listed on all plans) |
| Site audit | Homepage plus about a dozen pages | Site Audit, 170+ issues, up to 25,000 pages per project on Lite |
| AI crawler access and llms.txt checks | Yes, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, plus llms.txt | Site Audit has an AI discoverability section; exact checks not listed on the pages we read |
| Ready-made fixes | Fix pack: exact fix per finding, generated llms.txt, schema, meta and social tags | Patches, in the Project Boost Max add-on ($200 a month per project) |
| AI visibility tracking | AI visibility verdict, 0 to 100 score with fixes (credits) | Brand Radar across six AI platforms; prompt tracking included in paid plans |
| Where to launch and get listed | About 150 curated opportunities ranked for your product, submission copy, link-back checks | Not offered; Content Explorer finds link prospects |
| Google Search Console data | Reads it (read-only) | GSC Insights; GSC is the recommended way to verify a site |
| Content editor | No | AI Content Helper (Content Kit add-on from $99 a month) |
The short version: every row where Ahrefs says "yes" and Verdy says "no" is a research and tracking feature. Every row where Verdy is stronger is about getting a new site ready and in front of people.
#Pricing comparison
Prices as shown on verdy.site and ahrefs.com/pricing on September 28, 2026. Ahrefs prices are monthly billing; paying annually saves "up to 17%."
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Verdy free | $0 | Every audit finding with title and severity, as often as you like; free quick tools; the launch console |
| Verdy Fix pack | $30 one time | Evidence and exact fix for every finding, generated files, printable report, implementation brief, 100 AI credits |
| Ahrefs Free | $0 | Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics for verified sites; 5,000 crawl credits a month per project; 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once |
| Ahrefs Starter | $29 a month, monthly only | 200 credits a month; Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker; no add-ons |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 a month | 5 projects, 6 months of history, 750 tracked keywords, 5 tracked AI prompts, 100,000 crawl credits, 1,000 credits per user |
| Ahrefs Standard | $249 a month | 20 projects, 2 years of history, 2,000 tracked keywords, 10 AI prompts, Content Explorer |
| Ahrefs Advanced | $449 a month | 50 projects, 5 years of history, 5,000 tracked keywords, 20 AI prompts |
| Ahrefs Enterprise | $1,499 a month | Annual commitment, uncapped API, SSO, unlimited history |
A few things the headline prices don't show. Extra users cost $40 to $80 a month each on Lite through Advanced. Brand Radar AI is also sold on its own from $199 a month, and custom prompt packages start at $50 a month. The pricing page says "We never run discounts," doesn't offer a trial, and states that "Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general."
In year-one terms: Verdy costs $0 or $30. Ahrefs Starter costs $348 a year, and Lite costs $1,548 a year on monthly billing. That gap is fine if you use what Ahrefs sells. It's a lot to pay for backlink and keyword data on a site that doesn't have either yet.
#Ease of use
Verdy is built for founders, not SEO specialists. You paste a URL, and findings come back with a title and a severity, so you know what to fix first. The launch console turns "get discovered" into a ranked list and daily missions, with copy already written for each destination.
Ahrefs is deep, and depth has a learning curve. It's clear once you know what you're looking for, but a first-time user faces dozens of reports and metrics before any of them turn into a to-do list. On Starter and Lite, credits also mean thinking about which reports you open. Ahrefs offers free Academy courses and a Help Center, and they're worth an afternoon if you do upgrade.
#Best use case for each
Verdy is best for the launch window. Before launch and for the first few months, your problems are usually basic and fixable: pages not indexed, missing titles or schema, AI crawlers blocked by accident, no llms.txt, and nobody knowing you exist. Verdy finds those, gives you the fix and then points you at launches and listings. If AI search matters to you, our guide on checking AI crawler access goes deeper on that part.
Ahrefs is best once search is a channel you invest in. When you're publishing articles to rank, you need to know what people search, how hard each keyword is, who links to the pages that rank, and whether your positions are moving. That's Ahrefs' home turf, and nothing in Verdy replaces it.
#Pros and cons
#Verdy
Pros:
- The audit is free, and the Fix pack is $30 once rather than a subscription.
- Checks AI crawler access and llms.txt, and generates llms.txt, schema, meta and social tags for you.
- Launch console ranks about 150 curated launch and listing opportunities for your product and writes the submission copy.
- Verifies that your listings actually link back to you.
Cons:
- No backlink index, keyword database or daily rank tracking.
- Crawls about a dozen pages, so it isn't built for large sites.
- No content editor.
- AI features, like the visibility verdict and AI discovery runs, use credits.
#Ahrefs
Pros:
- Best-in-class backlink data in Site Explorer.
- Keyword research and rank tracking in one place.
- Deep site audits for large sites, up to 5 million pages per project on Enterprise.
- Brand Radar tracks AI visibility across six AI platforms, and Ahrefs Free is useful on its own.
Cons:
- Costs climb fast once you add users and add-ons, and there are no discounts or general refunds.
- Credit limits cap usage on Starter and Lite.
- Brand Radar's AI Visibility Index "may have limited coverage for brands with little or no search volume," in Ahrefs' own words, which describes most new sites. Ahrefs points brands that aren't well known to custom prompts instead.
- No launch or listing workflow.
#Which is better for you
| You are | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch founder | Verdy, plus Ahrefs Free once you're live | Nothing to track yet. You need a clean, indexable, AI-readable site and a launch plan. |
| Just-launched SaaS | Verdy plus Ahrefs Free; Ahrefs Starter if you want light keyword research | Listings and first backlinks matter more than rank data right now. |
| Growing content site | Ahrefs Lite or higher | Keyword research, rank tracking and backlink gaps are the daily job now. |
| Agency | Ahrefs Standard or higher | Many projects, history and reporting. Verdy's free audit works for quick launch checks on client sites. |
#The setup most founders should use
- Fix the basics with Verdy. Run the free audit and fix what's critical. Buy the Fix pack if you want the exact fix and generated files for every finding.
- Verify your site in Search Console and Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs recommends verifying through Google Search Console, and it's the quickest route. You'll get your own backlinks and a Site Audit at no cost.
- Get listed. Work through the launch console and our guide to your first 10 backlinks. Pick directories carefully; our list of startup and SaaS directories helps.
- Upgrade to paid Ahrefs when content SEO is real. The signals: you publish regularly to target keywords, you're guessing at which topics to write, you want to track rankings, or you need to study competitors' backlinks. Starter is the cheap way in; move to Lite when credits run out.
#Alternatives
- Google Search Console (free): your real queries, clicks, impressions and indexing status, plus a Links report. It's the one tool every site should have; see Verdy vs Google Search Console.
- Bing Webmaster Tools (free): includes a backlinks report for your site and a comparison against up to two other sites.
- Semrush: the main all-in-one rival to Ahrefs. As of September 2026, plans on monthly billing are SEO at $139, Starter (SEO plus AI search) at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549. There's a free account with 10 reports a day and a seven-day free trial.

#FAQ
#Do I need Ahrefs for a new website?
Usually not at first. A new site has few backlinks and no rankings to track, so most of what paid Ahrefs measures isn't there yet. Start with Google Search Console, the free Ahrefs account and a launch-stage audit, then pay for Ahrefs when you're investing in content that targets search keywords.
#Is Ahrefs free?
Partly. Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives you Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics for sites you verify, with limits such as 5,000 crawl credits a month per project, as of September 2026. It doesn't include Keywords Explorer or Rank Tracker. Ahrefs also has free tools, like a Backlink Checker that shows the top 20 backlinks to any site.
#Can Verdy replace Ahrefs?
No. Verdy has no backlink index, keyword database or rank tracking, which are the main reasons people pay for Ahrefs. It covers a different stage: launch-stage fixes, AI-readiness and getting listed. The two work well together.
#How much does Ahrefs cost in 2026?
As of September 2026, Starter is $29 a month (monthly billing only), Lite is $129, Standard is $249, Advanced is $449 and Enterprise starts at $1,499 a month with an annual commitment. Annual billing saves up to 17%. Extra users and add-ons like Content Kit, Report Builder and standalone Brand Radar cost extra.
#Does Ahrefs track AI search visibility?
Yes, through Brand Radar. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and custom prompt tracking also covers Claude. Paid plans include a small daily prompt quota (5 on Lite), and Brand Radar AI is sold separately from $199 a month.
#Does Ahrefs have a free trial?
Its pricing page doesn't offer one. The FAQ says "We never run discounts" and points website owners to Ahrefs Free instead. On refunds, it says Ahrefs "does not issue refunds in general," though you can ask on a monthly plan you haven't used.
#What's in Verdy's $30 Fix pack?
The evidence and exact fix for every audit finding, generated files (llms.txt, schema, meta and social tags), a printable report, an implementation brief and 100 credits for AI features. It's a one-time payment, as shown on verdy.site in September 2026. The audit findings themselves, with titles and severity, are free.
#Final recommendation
If you're pre-launch or just launched, start with Verdy and the free Ahrefs account. You'll fix what's actually blocking you, get listed in the right places and see your first backlinks, for $0 or $30. Paid Ahrefs becomes worth it the day search is a channel you're investing in: when you need keyword data to decide what to write and rank tracking to see if it's working. At that point, it's the better tool by a wide margin, and Verdy stays useful for launches and AI-readiness alongside it.
